the new elizabeth market was developed in public workshops in cooperation with bogevischs buero. the contemporary market with a nostalgic flair is situated on top of a two story underground parking garage. locals and vendors alike were actively included in the design process, from the market’s look and layout to the materials used.
“those who remember the years of fundamental opposition by many Swabians against the renewal of the Elizabeth Market will barely believe a new plan actually exists with which everyone can be pleased.” Thomas Kronewiter, Süddeutsche Zeitung
the results are, for example, the compartmentalized structure of the stands as well as two public roof terraces as new urban qualities. with these changes, a piece of public space given back to the neighborhood while simultaneously positively contributing to the microclimate, to rain water management and retention, and to the city’s biodiversity with the implementation of green roofs. the market ground consists of a mix of original and new pavers, reminiscent of the old munich sidewalk tiles. the pattern of the pavers define areas of the market such as outdoor sale space for vendors, delivery zones, and highlight the transition from quieter zones to those of the hustle and bustle of the market.
